Clark County's Republican Party has removed an article from its Web site that falsely said Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama "is a Muslim."
Obama is a practicing Christian and has never been a Muslim. Jon Devore said he'd been able to check the false rumor about Obama at the fact-checking Web site snopes.com. http://www.columbian.com/news/localN...f-GOP-site.cfm |

I don't like the chairperson's taking of responsibility:
- she apologises that due diligence in fact checking was not carried out, but she does not apologise for having posted lies. - she claims that others post lies about President Bush and are not challenged on it, but does not state if the others are officials of the Democratic party. This reads to me like a big "I'm sorry I got caught, but others are doing it too" line very similar to the ones my kids give me when they are caught riding their bikes beyond the boundaries established for them.

Were you expecting anything less?

From an official of a political party, I would expect that the apology prepared for them at least read sincere.

Last week in my Comp II class, I asked my students to write a rough draft of an argument based on a position they hold that they feel they could back up with facts if asked to do so. I was trying to illustrate how facts have a way of interfering with hastily preconceived notions.
One of my students wrote about Obama's secret religious allegiances, including such gems as "Osama Obama should go back where he came from," "if he can't worship America's God, he should go back where he was born. (Hawaii, I suppose?)" After much deliberation--as I didn't want to write comments right away--I finally asked her after class Monday if she could back up her thesis, and she said sure. I told her I was looking forward to seeing her evidence. Long story short (too late), she brought in as evidence yesterday a printed copy of one of the infamous e-mails, complete with the names of the five gazillion people who'd forwarded it. I was speechless, and that doesn't happen often. |

Am I the only one who thinks the worst part of this whole "Obama is a Muslim" thing is the fact that people actually think it would be some horrible horrible thing if he actually was?

An eyeroll and a muttered "Okay, you're right and I'm wrong." When I told her that wasn't the point, she said, "Well, anyway, I'm not voting for a muslim." |
