Comment: I've been wondering about the validity of an old gambling story
I've often heard. The gist is that, prior to the 1969 baseball season, sportsbooks in Vegas had the New York Mets listed at 1000-1 odds. The story goes that somebody bet 1000 dollars on those odds prior to the season starting, and made $1,000,000 on that bet. I can't find anything on the internet either confirming OR debunking that story. I know odds like this (team odds to win the World Series prior to the season beginning) are posted by sportsbooks all the time. Just wondering if there's any way to find out if this story is true or false. |

"But, as the joke went, 1969 was guaranteed to be their best season ever -- they were guaranteed to finish no worse than sixth because the league had been split into two six-team divisions. Still, oddsmakers gave the Mets only a 100-1 chance of winning the World Series." From ESPN.

It would also depend on the casino. If you happen to be in Vegas in July, check out the different sportsbooks' odds on teams winning the Super Bowl.
Some will only give max odds of 100-1, while I've seen 500-1 at others. |

Would you expect anything less from the Miracle Mets?
