Comment: a fellow I met from Panama told me that there are a bunch of
folks there named Usnavy. the name became mysteriously popular a while back, particularly among folks who were described to me as the Central American counterpart of "White Trash". the story goes that they were the children of single women who had - ahem - relations with members of the United States Navy. the fathers of course split and the kids all got named Usnavy, I guess because the men never divulged their real names. |

I can't see that many inflicting that on thier kids. It is effectively saying 'yes, my mama spread her legs without bothering to get a name.' It might happen occasionally, but I'm sure it isn't epidemic. And where are the kids named 'Usarmy', 'Usaf' and 'Marine'?

I don't get it. The women had sex with US Navy members and had kids - so they named them Usnavy because they didn't know the men's names??? I don't see what one has to do with the other.

Assuming there were even a minute kernel of truth to this, the one thing that came to mind is who they would put on the birth certificate as the father. So the kid wouldn't be named USNavy, but the father would.

I have a Chilean friend who grew up in Venezuela. She told me that it is common for Venezuelan parents to give their children unusual names. We were discussing this several months ago when she mentioned hearing several years ago about a Venezuelan mother who named her child Usnavy. It wasn't due to a mysterious father, though, but merely because the mother saw it written on the side of a large boat and thought it sounded nice.
Unfortunately, I don't have a cite. |

I suspect this is a joke. I heard a variant of it a long time ago wherin the pregnant girl remembers the name of the father because on one chest his last name was printed "Jones" and on the other was his first name "Usarmy".
I'm not saying it is a GOOD joke... On the other hand, strange things happen. I served some time in Panama and saw some strange things...but I don't recall anybody named Usnavy, although in the middle of the jungle near Costa Rica I did have a very fine local man who had the seemingly out of place last name of Smith. |
