Icon24 Smoking Smarties

Comment: Dear Parents,
It has come to our attention that some of our students are involved in
something that is known as "smoking smarties." Based on the information
given as well as our concern for our students' safety and the risk of
choking, we have addressed this issue over the homeroom and afternoon
announcements. The purpose of this e-mail is to enlighten you with this
practice that we feel can be hazardous to your son or daughter's health.
The link below provides a better understanding of what some students are
involved in. Due to the potential danger, I have made it clear to our
students that possession of smarties (or similar candy) will result in a
Class II offense. As always, the safety of our students is a top priority.

And what's wrong with that?

Sure kids could choke, but they could choke on their school lunches, so are we going to stop offering them?

The cynical side of me wonders if this would have been completely ignored had the child in the video not been black. Additionally, how is this different from ingesting Pixie Stix?

That's pretty ingenious. We always had to make do with the bubble gum cigarettes, and they were only good for one puff of "smoke".

Somehow I never was harmed by them, nor did I become a smoker.

I also remember students being silly in elementary school, crushing up crackers and pretending to snort them like cocaine with the straw from their milk. We all had a really good laugh when one of the boys accidently actually snorted some and it gave him a nosebleed.

note to UK snopesters: these may not be the Smarties you're thinking of.

How would you smoke chocolate, anyway?

I think the question is, does that really work? Especially in the last shot, it looks rather like cigarette or cigar smoke that's been superimposed on top.

I know that's the point of it, but US "smarties" are like Love Hearts or some other sherbet style hard sweets, aren't they? Can you really crush them into a powder so fine that it looks and behaves like blue-ish smoke just by rubbing the packet? Even powdered sherbet wouldn't do that, or even if it can look smokey when dry, it's not going to stay that way in your mouth...

I loved those bubble gum ciggies! However, I think I disagree with you that they are harmless. I had a lot of cavities when I was a kid and I had lots of those bubble gun cigarettes.....

UK Smarties do come in a cigar-shaped tube; you could take the end off and "inhale" them. That would be more of a choking hazard too - I thought it would be what the video was about before I saw it and remembered they were a different sweet in the USA.

Confused me for a second... chocolate isn't known for being particularly easy to... Oh wait, Aztecs. Nevermind. In fact, that's only in the Simpsons. I think

Either way, odd thing to do. I've know people at school that tried smoking various powders and so forth claiming them to be all sorts of things. The best was the guy suspended for selling 'grass' to other students.

Yes. That's right. Grass.

It's the green stuff growing on the entirely mundane football pitch. It won't get you high.

ETA - Apparently I'm remembering a Simpsons episode where they smoke chocolate. Troy McLure springs to mind talking about Aztecs. In the real world, the made it into a drink, not smoked it, according to wikipedia's chocolate article.

Actually, US smarties are just a pastel colored sugar pill. They're already quite powdery, and will disolve into a pile of powder with just a little bit of effort. (Never, ever leave a roll in your purse unless you like sugar powder all over your possessions.)

I happen to have some smarties in my candy bowl here. Let me try it...

I think it worked. I got a wee little puff anyway, although not as impressive as in the video. I completely failed to choke. Sadly, it didn't work with the SweeTarts.

Bah, that would be such a waste! If you have to play with your smarties instead of eating them, better to glue them to a pair of pants for a Halloween costume. Don't use water based glue though. Melts the shells.

I wouldn't think it would be very different at all. I have a co-worker who claims he almost choked to death on a Pixie Stix. He said when he tilted it back it all went straight to the back of his throat and he inhaled some of it. All of his friends were laughing while he struggled to breath.

Because of this thread, I now have an 18 oz. bag of Smarties (partially eaten) and a massive case of sugar overload. Id forgotten how much I like these things, and how addictive they can be.

Anyway, like BlushingBride I was unable to get a result like that in the video, but it did work a little. It was kind of hard to get a sufficient amount of powder at first; it takes longer than the video makes it look. And, I'm happy to report that I didn't choke or die, though I did cough a little when I forgot that I wasn't supposed to inhale.

Yep, definitely something we should be worried about . I am more concerned about the crack-like addictiveness of the sweet, sweet sugar than kids choking.

SweeTarts don't seem like they'd break down into a fine enough powder.

They would if you used a hammer. Or a frying pan.

Mostly I just tried it on the SweeTarts because I had an excuse to eat some SweeTarts.

Sugar is a gateway drug! That's why the principal is all up in arms.

First you get the sugar, then you get the money, then you get the women.....
