United States To get to Paradise, some Americans go to Intercourse first

The United States has its fair share of towns with odd place names, some with stories that rival the name for originality.

Here in Georgia we have a town called Enigma - how puzzling. But how can you not be attracted to towns with names like Social Circle and Flowery Branch.

As a missionary in Colorado, I once was amused to receive a phone call from another missionary in Paradise - California.

But my favorite is Weed, California (of course).

Also in California, is a Manteca; doesn't that mean lard ?!

I'm still new to New Mexico, but feel right at home when there are so many streets and towns with the same names as in CA, such as Santa Rosa, San Mateo, etc. I know there's a Santa Cruz (my long-term hometown in CA) and I think there's a San Francisco, too!

In the heart of the Rockies in Colorado, there's a small town, Salida, which in Spanish means "exit." An acquaintance of mine once drove to Mexico with her husband, and after waking from a nap, saw the exit signs on the Mexican hiway, reading "Salida," and sleepily said, in all seriousness, "oh, no; we've driven in a circle." Corny, but true! But, not as funny as the exit signs on Germans hiways, which read, "Fahrt."

Hard for anyone to compete with F*cking, Austria, though (although I prefer the relative subtlety of Intercourse, PA).

That provoked a lot of sniggers in our English class when we read Of Mice and Men

Do we really need to censor the name of a town in Austria? Have we really gone that far?

Actually, they read "Ausfahrt", meaning "Way Out" or "Exit". And the "a" is long, not short as in "fart".

Sorry to spoil the fun.

Not far from Hamburg, there's a village called "Welt" ("World"). I alwas meant to go there to take a picture of the end-of-town sign...

Don "at world's end" Enrico
