Ew yuck, poor thing!

A friend of mine ran into a deer and the same thing happened. The body of the deer went into the engine compartment and the legs (and maybe even the head) went flying. The outside didn't look too terrible (some front end damage) but the engine was shot.

eta: I've also heard about this happening with dogs.

Looks like the deer climbed up into the engine to keep warm and whamo. Happened to a neighbors cat once.

How the heck did it get in there? It doesn't look like there's enough space for a deer to voluntarily climb in, nor does it look like a collision would create enough force to ram it in there like that.

And.....drumroll please.......

How do we know that it's not just a fo......oh, nevermind.

At freeway speeds, I imagine parts of the deer could get wedged pretty far into a car. Sometimes around here, the freeway will be covered with what they call "Deer smear," which is a pinkish brown sticky stain that's just about all that's left after a high-speed collision with a deer. Especially a semi or large SUV will leave very little behind if it hits a deer at 75 mph.

It's probably a muntjac:

They're pretty small, so it looks about right to me.

A deer native to China, which apparently can be found in England has managed to escape over the English channel to Germany. I wouldn't think so. It's probably a roe deer.

Maybe, but it looks too dark to be the blond variety, and I don't see any spots to make it the spotted kind.

Maybe the spots wound up in the trunk.

Well, the only spotted roe deer around here are the calves. I still think it looks very much like a grown up roe as red deer are darker and so are fallow deer, which are spotted as adults.

A good bet, though, is that it's not an elk or a reindeer.

You're right I'm sorry, I read roe deer and was thinking fallow...sorry about that. It's fallow I meant that have the spots, I don't think the coloring on the one in the OP is right to be fallow.

It could have gotten there by being carried by African swallows...
