Default McCain Asleep During State of the Union Speech?

Video of McCain sleeping during Bush's speech

http://thinkprogress.org/2007/01/24/...-falls-asleep/

It sure doesn't make him look young and vigorous.

Default McCain asleep?

I saw that last night during the speech and wondered if he was asleep. I assumed he was looking down at something (a cell phone, pda, his navel), and that his slight changes of expression were a result of whatever he was reading.

On the other hand, maybe he was dreaming about chasing squirrels...

Could it have been playing possum to make Bush look bad? It's a conspiracy!

It appears the person in front of him (mostly blocked by all the crap on the screen) is 'sleeping' as well.

If he was nodding off, his head would be showing his agreement to everything that the President was saying... (nod... nod... nod) - especially if he suddenly woke up enough to swallow (as he did).

He was looking down at something in his lap.

I think he is looking down, not sleeping. To me, his face does not have a relaxed, sleeping look to it.

The caption in the Washington Post said that L.A. Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa and Maryland Gov. Martin O'Malley were "sleepily" flanking D.C. Mayor Adrian Fenty during President Bush's speech.
