School rumor travels fast and furious on Web

It sounded like a juicy, made-for-the-tabloids scandal.

A pair of lesbians were voted best couple by the senior class at Colonie Central High School, but homophobic high school administrators banned them from the yearbook.

It became an instant Internet cause celebre. More than 300 people from several states and as far away as South Africa and New Zealand added their voices to social network Web sites within hours of a posting that railed against gay discrimination.

There was a slight problem: It wasn't true.
