Icon18 "Bump keys" redux

Comment: I received this note and the film being referenced is scary. I find nothing about this ability for "master keys to be bumped/used on MOST house locks".

Is this a scam, or is principle similar to Kryptonite locks
and BIC pens; or is a locksmith just trying to sell new
and more expensive house locks?? dave costello

If you go to you tube & search the term "bump lock" a lot of videos come up. A locksmith I work with explained this to me (we of course do not use this technique if you want to even call it that)...basically it works only 1/2 of the time...I forget the exact explanation as to why. I had never heard of it before then (supposedly there have been news stories)

Looks like the bumping jars the pins enough to move them up. Wikipedia has an article on it.

Professional lock-pickers have used similar methods for years.

They don't tell you how to make the key and that is understandable, but as a homeowner maybe I should know so I could TRY my locks to see if it will work before I trade in my locks that may be perfectly good. Or at least have trained professionals that could come to your house and try it out before you take the new ones out of the package so you could return the. $150 times 5 doors seems a little spendy if $150 total may be perfectly good.

Then I would also have to add that my house had been broken into. It was winter, I was gone for a couple days. They busted out a window. Not only did I have real damage to my house, a big mess to clean up, and some loss, that didn't compare to a wide open window in below freezing weather and a really old furnace running constantly to keep my home at 62 degrees for 2 days. Had they just opened the door they might have shut it when they left. Probably not but there is that chance.

I saw an online video that showed exactly how to make the keys. Very easy - even for a non-technical guy like me.

Locks just keep the honest out. A good, monitored security system can help with the rest, but nothing is 100% safe unless you want to pay for the security of Fort Knox...
