Icon81 Cancer, not arsenic, likely killed Napoleon

Napoleon Bonaparte died a more prosaic death than once thought, succumbing to stomach cancer rather than arsenic poisoning, according to new research.

I'm trying to remember how many years ago it was that I read about Napoleon's stomach cancer. I do remember it was presented as a sure thing (i.e., definitive cause of death)--or at least as sure as you can be about someone who's been dead that long.

I think i got that part of history wrong, since i thought that stomach cancer was his known cause of death and arsenic poison a theory still being discussed.

Once when I was in the tenth grade, my biology teacher informed the class that Napoleon Bonaparte died as a result of brain deterioration caused by syphilis. She said "veneral disease." I commented that he no doubt had-- I left off the rest of the sentence. The teacher finished it "he had a good time."

I wonder where the teacher got her information. I never read anywhere that Napoleon died of STD complications.
