As to authenticity, while there are indications that her depictions of homosexuality may be far from enlightened, my quick search doesn't find any sign of this quote other than the blog referenced above. If it's a coverup, it's a good one.

Not that I'm aware of. In her books, when dragons hatch prospective dragonriders are put forward, and each dragon chooses the dragonrider they'll bond with. Gold dragons are mating females, which are very rare and bond only with het women. Bronze, brown and blue dragons are the butch manly types. Green dragons are like worker bees - they're infertile females. They're the most numerous, and originally they were bonded with women. Due to the complications of dragonrider pregnancy, they started trying to bond greens with male riders instead. So yeah, there's a reason why Anne McCaffrey gets asked about her views on homosexuality. Pern has a mostly gay airforce.

If the OP quote were accurate, it would seem as though McCaffrey were of the opinion that gays (some gays, at least) are "made" rather than born -- which seems to contradict the Pern view that it's all pre-determined.

Then again, it is a fantasy universe, so I suppose she could have different rules about it there.

(So would the quote imply that hetero couples ought not to experiment with the woman using a strap-on to do her guy from behind? Sounds as though it would make the guy lose interest in her later....)

Errrm ... I rather like anal sex, but I'm not gay In the S&M world, I've met straight guys that like anal penetration from female partners (strap-ons, but plugs and stuff).

I had a similar argument with a very homophobic colleague (thankfully an ex-colleague - he's the one who said I was a disgrace to women and probably a repressed lesbian because I didn't want children). I went and looked up some figures and found that oral was way more common than anal among gay guys. The same stupid NFBSKing colleague preached that AIDS got into the hetero community because of straight guys having anal sex because it was "trendy" to go (temporarily) gay
