Blow Your Top Make Mountain Dew glow

Comment: My son told me about this video clip on youtube that claims
that you can make Mountain Dew Glow with just a little bit of
baking soda and hydrogen peroxide. The clip is fairly convincing, but the
chemistry doesn't make sense to me. Is this a hoax?

My guess is that it's fake. The choice of Mountain Dew seems to be the association of that color with "glowing" to try to make it more convincing. What special ingredient would the Dew have that other drinks don't?

Why the long shot of the baking soda spoon? Because it gives the filmmakers time to switch bottles. (Note the label is turned in a slightly different direction after panning out.)

I didn't see a difference between labels after the close-up on the baking soda.

Not to say it's real - I just didn't see it.

Before the shot you can clearly read the Mountain Dew logo. After the shot it has turned far to the right. (I don't know if that's when the switch was made but I can't think of any other reason the bottle has been turned.)

I noticed a small jump in the footage right after they finished pouring the Mountain Dew.

I wonder if they just added a green glow stick to the mostly-empty Dew bottle? You never really get to see inside of it. I know that some of those things are specifically made to light up when shaken/hit, so maybe that's what activated the glow? Just pure speculation here.

I think they switched the Dew bottle with one that already had the glowstick fluid in it and adding the peroxide activated it.

hahaha... y'all got entirely too much free time. I particularly loved the "make sure you pour it right!" and "Whoah, mountain dew!" parts.

And the "It pours real smoooth..." had me in stitches hehe. Oh, and "Ok, real live baking soda!" and the associated putting baking soda in bottle sound effect, I almost cried I was laughing so hard.

"Wow, that could power a whole city!"

I think we should have poured the concoction into the ant farms we used in last year's Aspartame experiment to see if we couldn't have brought nuclear power to the colony.

Personally, I love the sound effects the best! Thank god I was the only one at work when I watched it!

And the shaking it again...

And snopes' comment about how much it was glowing! Priceless!

I vote fake. The Mountain Dew bottle left the view of the camera TWICE during what they called the "experiment" - and could have been replaced by anything to make the results come out the way they did. Also, when this "snopes" guy filmed and that "Barbara" person opened the bottle, I couldn't hear the bottle cap break the safety seal (for your protection) - which means that it could have been previously opened and messed with.

Who knows, that could have been urine in there!

Did you see how closely these "snopes" and "Barbara" people panned in to the peroxide? Clearly that was to allow them a chance to switch out bottles with something non-glowy.

He still has his left hand on the bottle when the camera zooms out. Seems like the obvious place the switch happens. Cut open a light stick and pour the insides in, and voila.
