This story is about the old Lion Country Safari in Southern California, which closed in 1984. I received this "true story" in an e-mail from a friend, and I can't verify it one way or another. My Skeptic-O-Meter is pegged, but who knows? Of course, there's no cite, and no date when this allegedly happened...
----- A funny and true story about this park-one reason it is no longer with us. A daughter of a friend of mine drove her red VW bug thru--she encountered an elephant on her journey who used to be in the circus and always sat on a red stool. Well, when the VW came by, the elephant promptly SAT on the front end of her car. Being prior to all the "lawsuits" for anything time, she left the park after her trip through, and got on the San Diego Fwy to go home. About 5 miles down the road, she was pulled over by the CHP and ordered out of her car, etc. Apparently a VW fitting her car's description had been seen leaving the scene of a hit-and-run moments before. You can imagine the cop's face when she insisted the elephant SAT on her car! After hours of talking to the Animal Park, they finally believed her story--what a hoot! |

That legend is considerably older than Lion Country Safari. The LCS in California opened in 1970, but the "car squashed by elephant" legend was used by Burns & Allen at least as far back as the 1950s.
