There are 4 ingredients in Dasani bottled water:
water, magnesium sulfate, potassium chloride, salt Water is a molecule which consists of 2 hydrogen atoms bonded to and atom of oxygen. Your body is over 2/3rds water. So is the Earth. Magnesium sulfates are more commonly called Epsom salts. They can be ingested, but they are a laxative, among other uses. Salt is salt. I'd go deeper into it, but you get the idea. If you will notice the 3rd ingredient is potassium chloride. Image:Potassium chloride.jpg Any idea what Potassium chloride is? You do if you've ever been executed by lethal injection. Lethal injection has 3 steps: first, Sodium thiopental: to render the "offender" unconscious; second, Pancuronium/ Tubocurarine: to stop all muscle movement except the heart. This causes muscle paralysis, collapse of the diaphragm, and would eventually cause death by asphyxiation. Last: Potassium chloride: to stop the heart from beating, and thus cause death. That's right kids. Dasani water contains an ingredient that has stopped many hearts from beating. Yet it is in Dasani water, which is produced by the Coca Cola Bottling Company. Coca Cola doesn't think water is good enough as it is. So they add regular salt and epsom salt. ~SALT MAKES YOU THIRSTY~ ~YOU DRINK MORE WATER WHEN YOU'RE THIRSTY~ It is 'enhanced' with these 'minerals' for a 'clean, pure taste' enjoy your next Dasani! |

The OP forgot to note that the dihydrogen monoxide in Dasani is probably the chemical responsible for more deaths than any other single chemical known to man.
It's all a mater of concentrations, really. Potassium ions are needed by the body. Too much of any salt - and almost any other chemical - will make the body stop working. The only real question is whether the author of the OP thought s/he was being clever or took that crap seriously. |

Both potassium and chloride are needed for life functions. I think the way that the lethal injection works is that your cells depend on having a significantly higher potassium concentration on the inside than on the outside (they have little pumps that create the concentration gradient); if the extracellular fluid is flooded with potassium, that will disrupt electric signaling in nerve and muscle cells.

I could be wrong, but I also wouldn't buy that 2/3 of the earth is water (I know, not at all central to the claim being made, but hey). I would believe roughly 2/3 of the earth's surface is covered by water, but not 2/3 of the volume.

Are there not, or did there not used to be some states where the condemned has the right to choose the method of execution from a set list? I seem to recall someone picking hanging, then there was a panic because no-one remembered how to conduct a hanging. Or was that a UL?
"For your heinous crimes Mr. Lizard, you are sentenced to death. You may choose between hanging, the electric chair, lethal injection or drinking a litre of Dasani." "I choose the Dasani your Honour." |

Coca Cola doesn't think water is good enough as it is.
So they add caramel, coca extract, sugar, carbon dioxide, and flavorings. Any idea what carbon dioxide is? It is a molecule with three atoms, one carbon atom and two oxygen atoms. Causes global warming. Makes you burp. It's also what some people use to commit suicide. Suicide by CO2 has 3 steps: first, seal the room or enclosure to make sure it is "air-tight"; second, produce carbon dioxide through combustion or (if the enclosure is small enough)simply by "breathing". Finally, die. Don't forget the essential ingredient for suicide -- Carbon dioxide: to stop the heart from beating, and thus cause "death". That's right kids. Coca-cola contains an ingredient that has stopped many hearts from beating. Well, actually it also contains water, which is also kills lots of people but we'll be covering the 3 steps for "how to drown yourself" in the next annoying message. The third ingredient is sugar. Sugar comes from sugarcane. 50% of the Earth's crust and the 90% of your brain that you don't use is made of sugarcane. Then there's Coca extract -- that's right, from the cocaine plant. Need I say more? ~SUGAR AND FLAVORINGS AND CARBONATION MAKES YOU HAPPY~ ~YOU DRINK MORE COKE WHEN YOU'RE HAPPY~ It is 'enhanced' with these 'flavors' for a 'refreshing and delicious taste' enjoy your next Coca-Cola! |

I had someone trying to point out to me that "other ingredients" were listed on the label of Dasnasty water, and "THEY WON'T TELL US WHAT IT IS!"
If it's below the radar of measurable quantities as required by the FDA, the mfgr. doesn't HAVE to list anything. Needless to say, the label does list the minerals, contrary to what my tin-hatted friend thought. |

That was Charles Rodman Campbell, one of the four people executed in this state since the reinstitution of the death penalty. (Westley Allen Dodd was another, I'm not sure who the other two were). As I recall from the case, there had to be a large search for a qualified hangman, as no executions had been done in this manner since the 60's. At the time Delaware and Washington were the only two states to have hanging on the books as a method of execution, and Washington has since made lethal injection the default method, in part because of the Campbell case.
A quick overview of his case can be found here. I think I spend just a bit too much time reading Ann Rule books... |

Did you know that potassium stuff is also in bananas?!??!?!
My doctor told me I needed either potasium pills, or to eat a banana a day (to keep the doctor away). |

Errm ... we need both sodium and potassium, in the right balance, in our bodies. An injection/overdose of excessive sodium chloride or of excessive potassium chloride will kill us by upsetting this balance (there was recently a case that accused a couple of killing their adopted son through salt i.e. sodium chloride poisoning).
Potassium chloride is safe in salt substitutes as people eat enough sodium in their diet and the balance is preserved (the people who use it probably consume too much sodium if they need to use a salt substitute). |

I have been lold that when Gibraltar switched from distillation to reverse osmosis to produce their drinking water the locals didn't like the tast and they had to add a very small proportion of sea water to the supply (they also have dual plumbing, with sea water supplied for toilet flushing)

This has to be satire.... please? Please? Please??? If not I'm gonna go curl up in the corner and cry.
I mean, if you want to make fun of how Dasani is made, go ahead, I think it's funny, too. They purify the water via reverse osmosis (RO) which removes essentially everything except good old H2O. But RO water tastes weird because people are used to all the minerals in their water. So they add back in just enough to make the taste "good." Presumably some tasting panel was involved. But to think that Dasani is actually scary because it contains ebil chemicals? Any adult who doesn't understand the concept that small amounts of a substance have a different effect than large amounts, or the concept that drinking something is entirely different than injecting it... well, it just makes me want to cry. Or vomit. I'm not sure which. It's like all molecules have to be placed in a "GOOD" or "EBIL" column, and once you go to the EBIL column, you can't come back. Hmmm, mebbe I should somehow turn this into an extra credit opportunity for my freshman chemistry students. Bee |
