Icon23 No Dairy = Lactose Intolerance?

Is it possible to become lactose intolerant if you haven't had any dairy for more than two years? Is it all right to have milk or milk products if they have been cooked?

All I've been able to find on the subject is about genetics, so could anyone help me out? I'm sure this has probably been discussed before, so feel free to chow. And if this is in the wrong board I'm sorry! This one just seemed right.

All I have is anecdotal evidence, but I went around a year drinking soy milk instead of regular milk and otherwise not having anything more real-dairy than a slice of cheese on top of a hamburger. At the end of this, any time I'd buy a milkshake or even order a latte and forget to say I wanted soy milk instead of regular milk, I'd get sick. I've gone back to drinking (a little bit of) milk and don't get sick anymore. YMMV.

Here's a link to a discussion on the old board.

It is possible to lose the ability to digest lactose over time; there are also degrees of intolerance, so you may be able to tolerate a small amount.

Thank you for the link. I've always been interested in this sort of thing.

Tell me about it; I was diagnosed with lactose intolerance about 10 years ago.
