Years ago I was sitting outside in the spring on some cold concrete and I was smoking. A girl came out and told me not to sit on the cold concrete because it'll give me hemorroids. She told me that her grandmother told her that. Is it true? And if not, has anyone else heard this?

Now that must of been a tough call Cancer/Hemorroids, what to warn you about.
Personally I think she made the wrong choice. |

I've heard it as never sit on a cold radiator as it'll give you piles, so presumably there are more variants of this old wives' tale for sitting on other cold surfaces.

I don't know how true it is, but it's definately been a point here. and it generally invovles any surface which takes a while to heat up. be it concrete, metal etc.

My mother used to tell me that sitting on a cold surface like concrete would give me a kidney infection. I don't think she ever mentioned piles though.

I'm not sure about causing 'roids, but sitting on cold concrete (or tile) floors certainly makes my 'roids feel worse. Maybe this is the origin of the tale? - Pseudo "a real pain in the butt" Croat |

I've also heard sitting on something cold being claimed as a cause of cystitis, most usually for young females. I am somewhat skeptical aout this.

Don't know about anything else, but I know from personal experience that sitting on cold concrete will make my butt feel cold.

At my job, the choice is either cold concrete or a muddy puddle. I've been choosing the concrete for months now, and I'm still 'roid free (Do women even get roids?). How long is it supposed to take? I'm completely willing to continue this as an experiment until summer if needed, provided that I get proper funding for the endeavor.

Just Google Image Search "hemarrhoid" (aka: Emma Freuds, Chalfonts etc)- you'll get your answer

Has anyone heard of a related idea where women should not sit on the ground at all? I had a woman tell me once that if a girl or woman sits on the ground, she will become infertile. Sitting on a coat is acceptable however.
My guess is that this idea stems from elders trying to make girls act ladylike by having them sit on stools instead of on the ground like boys could. |

Sitting on cold concrete can not cause hemorriods . They are generally caused by childbirth in women and straining to go to the bathroom in both men and women . Straining puts pressure and can cause veins in the bumm to stick out and become irritated . [ sorry kinda gross , but the question was asked !]
Second , no sitting on the ground can not cause a women to become infertile . I was a tom boy growing up and would sit for hours on the ground playing with hotwheels , or other things . I am not in the least bit infertile . In fact I have 5 children . Most old wives tales are not at all based on any medical facts . Being pregnant people will tell you some doozies !!!! The funniest one I heard was a friend was concerned with me drinking gatoraide when I was pregnant . I was having a problem at work with becomming dehydrated and getting dizzy all the time . My doctor told me to drink water or gatoraide to help hydrate me . One friend said they heard when you are pregnant you are not to consume anything you wouldnt allow a baby to consume . YUCK! I replied that baby formula is too expensive for me to drink ! LOL

Sitting on cold concrete will get you a cold hoo-haa. And if you go Brazilian. it'll get colder, faster.
A cold ass is no fun, either. I generally make it a practice to not sit on anything either very cold or very hot. I have a very discriminating hoo-haa, I guess!

My mom used to tell me not to sit on the cold ground when I was having my period. I don't remember clearly, but I think it had to do with getting cramps or something. My mom had some really odd ideas though.

In a different direction, I've heard that (if it's cold enough), you'll go numb and wet yourself.
