Icon102 New Van Gogh painting found

Art historians had known of the Van Gogh drawing, stored at the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam. But they had always wondered whether it was a copy of a completed painting.

Now, at last, the painting itself has been discovered—concealed under another painting in the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston.

I hadn't realized Van Gogh's career was so short -- only 10 years. Imagine what he could have done if materials had been on hand whenever he had an inspiration.

Maybe that would have affected his style and made it less distinctive. We'll never know. I don't understand this "imagine what he could have done" when he was one of the world's greatest artists anyway. I don't think he could have been remarkably better.

Maybe he couldn't have got any better, but there might be more of his work to enjoy.

Just as we'll never get the chance to enjoy (or even know which of) Sandro Botticelli's paintings he was forced to destroy in the bonfires of the vanities.

It's just harmess curiosity.
