Dear Friend,
British Petroleum is poised to start dumping up to 1,584 pounds of ammonia and 4,925 pounds of industrial solids into Lake Michigan every single day. Senator Dick Durbin and Congressman Rahm Emanuel have set up an online petition to stop these plans in their tracks. They'll be presenting the petition at a meeting with BP on September 1st. Please join me by signing their petition to BP here: http://ga3.org/campaign/bp_petition?rk=opecTz41GO6yW |

Since the EPA have already washed their hands of the matter (no pun) why not start a petition to crack down on gas guzzlers, such that BP would not need to expand it's refinery capacities in the first place?

While it might have ended up being safe and not causing any major issues for anyone, I could only imagine the worst-case scenario. Most of the Chicagoland area gets its water from intake cribs in the lake - imagine those shut down, and the entire population in that area suddenly without water. Even switching back to muncipal wells would take a while, and who knows if the supply could meet demand in the now more-heavily-populated areas?
