Icon401 Rudy Giuliani on freedom

Comment: Is this a true quote?

"Freedom is not a concept in which people can do anything they want, be
anything they can be. Freedom is about authority. Freedom is about the
willingness of every single human being to cede to lawful authority a
great deal of discretion about what you do."

Rudy Giuliani

I think someone has confused the concepts of freedom and the social contract.

Aye. What he said isn't exactly wrong: there is (and can be!) no such thing as a society that is 100% free. There will always be something I want to do, which someone else will take great pains to stop me from doing.

In a "free society" such as the western democracies, we have an organized system for drawing the line. As much as humanly possible, "We The People" determine which freedoms we will surrender, in order to obtain the necessary security.

It beats the hell out of living under a King/Emperor/Czar/Despot, where he makes those decisions.
