Icon18 Zippo is burning brighter than ever

Urban myth states Zippo lighters are made by prisoners and the lot code stamped on each lighter actually represents the prisoner who made it, his crime and the length of his sentence.

But nothing could be further from the truth.

Another bit of Zippo trivia - welders are allowed by OSHA to carry Zippo (or Zippo style) lighters only. The flick-bic type, with their plastic cases, can be cracked easily, and start a fire in the welders' pocket!

But you have to wonder how the decline in smoking and cheap butane lighter has affected sales.

From what I've seen, it's made no difference. I don't smoke, but still carry a Zippo most days. The whole "Be Prepared" thing and all.

They have also expanded their product line.. Just this past weekend whie out at the Zoo with the kids, the battery on my digital cam went out, so we purchased a one use camera from the gift shop, and it was a Zippo Camera (same Zippo logo).

Didn't Zippo also have that contract with Sony to design and build laptop batteries?

Never mind, I've got it.

Why would a welder need a Zippo lighter?

While I'm sure those factors have been an influence, people alo use them to light wood burning stores, campfires, candles, etc. So that means that there will always be a market for a well built lighter.

Because using a blow torch to light a cigarette is a bad, bad idea.
