Icon86 Don't eat fruit stickers!

Comment: Okay so as crazy as this may sound itís true. My mom came home
yesterday and told me about the daughter of a family member of mine and
how she got sick. Apparently the daughter who is a younger girl ate a
peach or nectarine or something along those lines and accidentally
ingested the sticker that they place on the fruit. She was unable to
digest the sticker so it stood in her stomach and accumulated mold.
Apparently when she started getting sick, she had to be taken into the
doctors to fix this problem. I know a lot of you have grandchildren or
even young cousins, nieces, or nephews so just a heads up to be aware of
the little things that we tend not to think twice about now-a-days. As
adults, we know not to eat the sticker, but younger children may not so
just be sure to check next time you see them eating a fruit that may
contain one of those little stickers.

I've always eaten the stickers and had no ill effects so far.

(You can't taste it and usually there isn't a bin around to put it in; eating it is the easiest way to get rid of it )

An awful lot of people seem to think that anything undigestable remains in the stomach permanently. Just because your body can't digest it doesn't mean your system can't excrete it.

I did see something on tv recently about a child who had a fruit sticker lodged in her lungs. I don't remember it having anything to do with mold, though.

ETA: here http://www.kxan.com/Global/story.asp?S=6861978

Mucus, though, not mold. And lungs, not stomach.

If the human tum is anything like my dogs then what does not get digested passes. In his case there have been some intersting things: foam earplugs, paper, a tummy full of turkey bones, Qtips, string, etc and they have all passed.

Heh I thought it was going to be about the sticker being laced with LSD. Eat a piece of fruit and get the added benefit of a fun trip.

Proceed please

I learned something recently that makes me wonder if the "don't swallow bubblegum or it will stay in your stomach forever" thing actually started as a legitimate warning.

Seems that smallish children who swallow bubblegum/chewing gum *can* get a seriously upset stomach from it. So parents, who got tired of repeating "don't swallow it, or you'll get sick!" every ten minutes because the kids just ignored them started saying it'll stay forever, it'll kill you, etc in hopes of getting them to listen.

The kid goes and tells another kid... who tells another kid... pretty soon it's common knowledge among kids. Since they never learn anything else, they grow up and tell their kids...

Sorta like a multi-generational game of Telephone lol.

And boogers stay in there forever! If you have to have surgery, the doctor will see them and know what you've been up to, young man.

Even if the fruit sticker was indeed indigestible, any mold on it would not be and thus would not have time to grow in one's stomach.

Unless I'm wrong and there is some kind of mold (pathogenic or not) that can grow in the highly acidic environment of the human stomach, so correct me if I am.

If I thought this would stop Kindergarteners, I might use it...man, you need to wash your hands a lot...

Nope. I don't think I could say it with a straight face. And that pesky honesty thing rears its head yet again...

[minor hijack]
I did, however, say in front of evryone else "Stop picking your nose and go wash your hands." It did help. A little.

The stickers are specifically marked on the boxes as 'Edible Labels'. That means they are supposed to be safe to eat.

I was bored at work a few years ago, and I noticed a half used roll, and the word edible on the box.

Out of curiosity I peeled about a dozen off of the backing paper, and ate them.

They are extrmely tough, and can't really be broken up by chewing - I would thing anyone eating a piece of fruit would notice the texture in their mouth, and remove it. They are not particularly palatable either.

I persevered, and swallowed them. The main point is - they are designed to be harmless and they are harmless.
