Comment: I have heard from a couple of people that the president of the Sierra Club owns a 4000 square foot house built of logs.
Can you confirm this? |

Um, what if he does? Aren't most homes built from wood of some kind that comes from logs? Since when does the Sierra Club go against people building shelter for themselves, no matter what the size?
(as a member/supporter of the Sierra Club myself, I'm pretty sure that I have never seen or read anything that says that using the resources that the planet provides is wrong, just that we need to use them responsibly) |

I'm not sure if the commenter is trying to say:
"Isn't it awful if this guy has a house made out of trees." Or "Isn't it great, if he's built a house almost entirely out of logs, rather than use more polluting materials like steel and brick." Or "I'm not really bothered, but has he got a log house or not?" |

Amory Lovins does have a big house. But from photos, it doesn't appear to be made of logs (as in a typical log cabin). Looks more like stone.

It is pretty much made out of steel re-inforced concrte, faced with sandstone, and with foam insulation. The roof is constructed from EPDM - whatever that is. To be fair it's not all 'his house'. He lives in part of it, but the rest is used as a research centre. Last edited by Eddylizard; 10 August 2007 at 05:45 AM. |

Why are we talking about Amory Lovins when the OP was about the Sierra Club president? The Current president of the Sierra Club is Robbie Cox.

My papa built the house I grew up in, and it had rafters, railings, and other decor made of pine logs. They were from trees which had died in a forest fire, and which the forest service sold at a very low price to anyone who wanted them. (You can still see the dark patches and streaks on the wood from charring from the fire!)
It's a little like the difference between cutting a tree down for firewood -- and merely picking up fallen branches. Silas |
