Hunt for Lord Lucan turns to New Zealand

A former Scotland Yard detective has been called in to investigate claims that the long-sought Lord Lucan is living in New Zealand.

Claims that Lucan, who would now be 72, is living rough outside the small town of Marton proved irresistible for former detective inspector Sidney Ball, who retired to New Zealand.

Rumours had spread that Roger Woodgate, a jobless Englishman living in a battered 1974 Land Rover with a cat, a tame possum and a goat called Camilla[some sort of republican jibe, I'll warrant - BB], was Lord Lucan, who disappeared in 1974.

Mr Woodgate says that he is, in fact, a former photographer for the Ministry of Defence in Britain. He moved to New Zealand in 1974 to enjoy his preference for free-living.

He is furious that his age and accent have raised suspicions. He has been living on a small triangle of boggy land, with a busy road on one side and a rail line on the other, for 5½ years. Before that, he lived in similar circumstances for 16 years on a farm until it was sold.

Whinge whinge whinge. As they say in New Zealand: how do you know when a plane-load of poms has arrived? When the engine stops, you can still hear the whining.

He was asked to check the claim by the television company making a series about Mr Woodgate’s war with his neighbours. But on arriving in Marton – population 6,000 – he immediately dispelled the rumour.

Methinks the neighbours may have been motivated to dob him in as Lucan based on something other than a genuine suspicion.
