Disney and Universal tailor attractions abroad to prevent culture shock
As American theme-park operators and contractors move into foreign markets, they often find that what passes for classic family entertainment here doesn't work elsewhere. Differences in language, customs, social values, humor, legends and interests force companies to develop variations on their themes.

Very enlightening article.
On a side note, I was never that impressed with the *American* castle at the Magic Kingdom either and I've never even visited a real castle.
