I recall reading back when Nancy Pelosi was first mentioned as becoming Speaker of the House that right before/after 911 she had commented that Osama Bin Laden was not a terrorist but a "social reformer" and active in Muslim charities.
Can anyone/Scopes confirm or deny this report? Thanks! |

I haven't heard anything along those lines, sorry. Do you remember where or how you heard it (i.e., on TV, in a newspaper, a friend told you, etc.?)
Anyway, welcome to the boards.

I can't help you with the rumor, but welcome. Just some advice- please use a more descriptive title, such as "Nancy Pelosi on Osama bin Laden." (Credit to you for using her name at least, and not calling the thread "Anyone hear this one?")
Also, the man's name is snopes. No "n" and a lower case "s." |

No, no "c," substitute "n," which is what you meant.

Thanks! Yes, I saw the "Scopes" fat finger boo boo.
As I recall it was in the print media, but it was a long time ago. |

I sincerely doubt that Pelosi said it (at worst, perhaps she said it in a context that made it clear that she did recognize him as a terrorist, but that context was removed), but I have no problem at all believing the right wing s**t machine has accused her of saying that and worse, and that the mainstream media gullibly repeated it at some point.

Slightly off-topic, but all Muslims can be described as charitable. One of the 5 pillars of Islam is to pay Zakat - this is a tax that goes to charitable causes (yes Jihad is considered 'charity'). Its 2.5% of one's annual income.

OK, found the answer! My apologies to Pelosi as I obviously confused her with Senator Patty Murray. Too many years passed since the statement and I remembered a female democratic senator from the west coast.
This came from a friend who is very attuned to the ramblings of the left. Be sure to read all of the following. ================================================== ==== I think you may be mistaking San Fran Nan Pelosi with that of Senator Patty Murray (D-Wa). She is famous for saying that OBL was such a great guy (you know, building all those daycare centers and all). The stupidity of that statement is sooooo immense. OBL (as the figure head of radical Islam) represents those who want (in 100% reality), uneducated, imprisoned in a home, as a slave for a man. The fact that Patty Murray didn't (and maybe still doesn't) know this is astounding. How come VP Dan Quayle was completely lambasted for misspelling "potato," and Patty Murray hasn't for teaching this complete wild fantasy about radical Islam and OBL? -J Democrat senator praises bin Laden Patty Murray asks students to ponder why U.S. lacks popularity of terrorist Posted: December 20, 2002 5:00 p.m. Eastern By Art Moore © 2002 WorldNetDaily.com http://www.worldnetdaily.com/news/ar...TICLE_ID=30114 SEATTLE – Sen. Patty Murray, D-Wash., told a group of high-school students in her state that the U.S. should adopt Osama bin Laden's nation-building tactics. "We've got to ask, why is this man so popular around the world?" said Murray, according to the Vancouver Columbian newspaper. "Why are people so supportive of him in many countries that are riddled with poverty?" The second-term senator, who faces re-election in 2004, was responding to questions from world history students and student government leaders at Columbia River High School in Vancouver, Wash., on Wednesday. |

1. Pelosi is a representative, not a senator.
2. Murray was lambasted for her remarks, whether she deserved it or not. 3. Context is key, as always. Murray was merely illustrating why it is that OBL, despite his despicable deeds, had such a following in that part of the world. Love it or hate it, it probably is in America's best interest to consider that question, rather than just leaving it at "they did it because they hate freedom."
