I was told the Gleneagles version by a close friend last February. I hadn't seen it before, but it just reeked of UL (though not to Fox, apparently). But I didn't debunk; instead I said, diplomatically, "Well, if it isn't true, it ought to be." Does that make me an enabler?

I heard this on the radio this morning! I had read it on Snopes months (or was it years?) ago.

I wanted to scream, "check your facts, you idiot!!!"

It was nearly word-for-word to the Snopes page, too.
Some "news" people just report anything, won't they?

DM told me "The True Story" as told by her taxi-driver regarding a Beckham's son birthday party.

2 lawyers from my home town (Hartlepool) had booked Alnwick Castle for thier wedding and reception party.

2 months before the date a phone call was recieved by the bride asking if they were prepared to change tha date by 1 week. The happy couple refused.

A few days later, another call suggesting if the couple changed the date a fee of 10,00 UKpounds would be paid to the couple and they refused.

A week or so later a phone call offering to pay for the wedding and a fee of 100,000 UKP was offfered and refused.

This went on for several weeks until the bridal party was recompensed by a free wedding, hotel accomidation for thier guests, a months honeymoon in a restort of the brides choosing and 250,000 UKP Inconvience fee to the bride and groom.

I really wasn't too surprised by what DM said to me as she does read http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Daily_Mail.

Am I really going to have to be the first pedant to point out that, even if the story were true, the Beckhams wouldn't have been "swindling" the "newlyweds" out of anything? In the story, they make a legitimate bargain with an engaged couple to trade an obscene amount of money for the couple's planned wedding date and spot. To "swindle" means to obtain something dishonestly.

I had a feeling this was on Fox "News," even before I clicked the thread.
