The Value of Pi
In his book of short science essays, "The Single Helix", Steve Jones cites as fact the April Fool hoax (now part of urban legend) about changing Pi from 3.14159 to 3 and wrote that thankfully the idea was dropped.
(He also go some cat genetics wrong, but that's a personal niggle not a sighting)
