Icon215 13 hands on Iwo Jima memorial

Comment: Is it true that there are 13 hands depicted on the Iwo Jima
Statue in Washington DC (tribute to the Marine Corps dead)? Five Marines
and a Navy corpman are copied from the Rosenthal photo depidting this
inspiring event but the rumor is that instead of 12 hands raising the flag
pole there are 13. The 13th hand is alleged to be a representation of the
hand of God.

As you can see from pictures easily found on the internet, there are not even 12 hands on the flag pole, but only 11.

ETA: U.S. Marine Corps gunnery sergeant Thomas W. Miller Jr., who was a Iwo Jima at that time and lives in Arlington, apparently has written a book debunking the myth: The Iwo Jima Memorial & the myth of the 13th hand.
