I'm sure there are large animals that have somehow evaded detection (several smaller animal species have been discovered over the last few years).

Eh, I suppose its not impossible that a species of animal (either new or thought to be extinct) is still alive and well deep in the jungles..
That said I doubt it has the magical powers to make people dizzy and turn day into night.. -MB

Megatherium, the Plestiocene era giant ground sloth, certainly existed alongside the ancestors of most South American tribes: it is thought to have become extinct (possibly due to human hunting) as few as 6000 years ago. Given the fact that most of these tribes have a very rich oral history, it isn't unlikely that the Mapinguary does indeed represent a real (although now extinct) creature that posed a real threat to their ancestors.
Unfortunately though the Amazon isn't the wild, unexplored jungle it once was and between deforestation, oil exploration and everything else going on down there it's highly unlikely that a breeding population could still exist without leaving a single bit of evidence. Even my cryptozoology side has to doubt this one, although I've read a lot about it. But hey, I imagine that people who live subsistance lives in the rainforest have a lot of time to make up good stories for the tourists. |

Why did I think this thread was about a Amazon.com/Monster.com merger?

Me three. And the sad thing is, I realized I already read this thread and article several days ago.

I thought so to, and I also think that an Amazon/Monster merger would be truly frightening.
