More than a century after his death, people are still trying to understand Charles Darwin. And a new report says those who label him anti-religion are wrong. The 19th Century English biologist famous for his theory of evolution supported Christian missionary work his entire adult life, reports a cultural historian.

Not all Christian groups are hostile to Darwin; there are many that accept him. It's only fundamentalist groups that have problems, but if you're not reading the bible literally (which practically no one did during Darwin's lifetime), the gap is not a big one.

Personally, I prefer Terry Pratchett's opinion:
.......People only go to hell if that's where they believe, in their deepest heart, that they deserve to go. Which they won't do if they don't know about it. This explains why it is so important to shoot missionaries on sight.

It happens to any scientific figure who is seen as 'on the athiests' side' - people come out with stories of deathbed confessions and secret religious leanings. This is why Richard Dawkins said he wants a tape recorder at his death bed.

Surely it doesn't seem that odd that Charles Darwin had at least some Christian leanings?

Modern Evangelical and Fundamentalist Christians would be surprised to find out how different their beliefs are from the beliefs of 18th and 19th century Americans, even though they constantly espouse that "old tyme religion." The beliefs of 18th and 19th centiry European Christians were even more different.
