Welcome to the ULMB!
This is our new and improved initiation thread. For those who don't know, the ULMB is the Urban Legends Message Board; it is the online community for the Urban Legends Reference Pages (ULRP or snopes.com). A couple important people you'll see around are our gracious hosts, snopes and Barbara, also known as The Mikkelsons. Four Kitties and I are minions of The Mikkelsons. We do things like fix broken links, delete accidental multiple posts, and answer questions to the best of our ability (though we may direct you to a higher authority). We members, affectionately known as snopesters, all strenuously attempt to abide by Barbara's Guide to Good Behavior: The primary rule of this board is to behave in a civil manner towards your fellow posters. I'm sure since reading the FAQ is part of the registration process that everyone has already done so; but if you haven't or need a refresher, please do. This thread is the place to introduce yourselves, say hi, learn the tricks of things like posting, searching, and making links, as well as some board lingo and etiquette. To help everyone learn the ropes, there are five questions at the end of this post for you to answer. These questions are designed to help you learn about this board and how it works and more seasoned members of the board will come along to help point you in the right direction. Participation is completely optional, but please feel free to take advantage of this thread. If you want to know something that isn't covered in the FAQ or hasn't been covered in this thread yet, you are very much encouraged to ask. (As a note to those more seasoned members, you can post new questions and tasks yourselves, but they must be relevant to learning about participation on this board. The point of this thread is supposed to be help people ease into using this board. I do encourage you to submit question or task ideas to me privately and I will rotate the questions below once a week or so to keep them fresh.) Wipe your feet, enjoy the boards, and welcome to the community! Questions (updated 27 June 2007):

I'll add a question. Our lovely comunity, like all online comunities sometimes encounters trolls. Upon encountering said under bridge dweller, what is the one thing that our lovely Admins recomend you do?

You can end a quote by typing "left bracket" "slash" "QUOTE" "right bracket." You can then open a new quote by doing "left bracket" "QUOTE" "right bracket."

Another question:
Acronyms, this time. What do the acronyms for YOMANK and NFBSK mean? How can NFBSK be used? Morrigan |

Is finding your whips relevant to learning how to use this board and fit into this community?

First, a troll is a person who purposefully tries to start arguments. Don't feed the trolls. Report them to the Admins to be banished to eternal darkness.Quote:
NFBSK stands for Not For British School K ids. It is used before anything that is not appropriate for work, church or children. IIRC, it was started when a group of British kids were posting at snopes and the conversation got a little risque. This happened before I started lurking, so I don't know the whole context. I personally think it needs to be changed to NSFHS (not safe for Hyper Squirrel). Ok, I got to practice quoting, bolding, copying and italicizing. If I ever get a digital camera I'll work on pictures. MerrySunshine |

You got almost everything-the only thing...NFBSK is also used in place of all/most swear/cuss words. Like "NFBSK that." Or "NFBSKing trolls."
Good work, MerrySunshine! Morrigan |

Hello. My name is Robin. I've lurked here for ages, but just recently decided to join.
*goes into Hermione Granger mode* 1. The first posting guideline is "Check the main site at www.snopes.com before posting an inquiry here to ensure that your question hasn't already been answered." 2. The oldest registered member is 13, since you must be that age or older to join the fourm. My computer isn't letting me search by age, so I can't tell you the oldest. 3. Three topics with the word "sloth" One Two Three 4. "Bookachow!" is a word used to redirect members to another topic or page on Snopes.com about the same topic. 5. In internet lingo, a "sock puppet" is an account used by someone with another account, in order to talk to his or herself, spamming the boards. Trolls, people who only join fourms to incite arguments, should be ignored and reported to the admins as soon as possible. YOMANK (you owe me a new keyboard) is used when one finds something funny and spews a drink onto their hardware. NFBSK means "not for British School Kids) and is used to denote possible inappropriate content. (I know that all of these have been answered already but I swear I looked them up myself.) Ok, I have a question. I have seen posts that are a quote within a quote. When I have quoted someone who quoted someone else, the only portion quoted for me is who I quoted. Does that even make a little bit of sense?
Anyway, how do I get the quote within a quote?MerrySunshine |

Thanks ya'll. I just learned something new. MerrySunshine Well, that's not what I meant to do. I think I have to add spaces to [ quote ] .. [ / quote]. OK, I'm done now, I figured out what to do. Thanks. |
