Any details of how that shot came to be? If they put it in the tree as a joke, good and well. However, if someone "flew" it into the tree, they might not be alive to be laughing about it.

No idea. The subject line is all the detail that was in the email.

First I thought the plane was too intact for it to be real, but if you look closely you can see that the wings are broken in a few places.

I also thought it might have been blown there in a hurricane, but I don't see enough other damage to the background scene for that.

This seems to be the same a/c. There is no NTSB report online yet. According to the FAA website, the aircraft, N6487J, is a Piper Cherokee registered to Vision Real Estate Management Co, Inc. of Colorado Springs, CO.

My guess is that it's an old aircraft placed there as a humerous eye catcher for the sign.

I've seen aircraft of sturdier construction but the same size that has hit trees, and the damage would have been far more substantial. Most likely, it would have destroyed both tree and aircraft to an almost unrecognizable state.

P.S. I almost missed your link. The blue text gets lost in the blue background.

Uh, Troberg, read Delta-V's post and the link in it.

Baseball N6487j

Hi All:

I'm afraid that the picture is real. The NOAA website notes the crash of N6487J on December 08, 2006 at Meadowlake Airport.

Quote:
PILOT...MINOR INJURIES AIRCRAFT DAMAGE SUBSTANTIAL AIRCRAFT LOST POWER ON DEPARTURE FROM 00V. THE PILOT HAD TO ABORT AN ATTEMPTED LANDING ON A ROAD DUE TO TRAFFIC. THE AIRCRAFT CRASHED IN A TREE NORTH OF THE AIRPORT AT APPROXIMATELY 1725 MST(0025 UTC).

The part that looks photoshopped to me is the "learn to fly here!" sign.

I reckon there were a couple other steps they neglected to mention between the engine failure and the crash.

Here's a good FAA site to get prelim data before the NTSB gets around to posting a synopsis at the ntsb.gov site. Unfortunately, that December 7 (or so) accident has already aged off of the FAA site.

I'm thinking that the pilot must have been very good if he managed to crash-land in a tree while taking so little damage.

I'm thinking if he was a good pilot he'd have put the airplane down on the ajacent road or on the runway with _no_ damage.

However, he only got minor injuries and didn't damage much on the ground, and that's pretty much as good as you can demand. Crunch all you want, we'll make more...

Ieuan's post above:

I assume he was just about to land on the road when he saw the car.

We had a banner plane land on the highway in front of the office a few months ago. This is a very busy street, but the pilot timed it just right to avoid an accident.

Through the magic of the Google Cache:
FAA Report

Any landing you can walk away from is a good one.
(A great landing is when they can use the aircraft afterwards)

Very true, and I am glad he walked away from it.

I had a buddy who forgot to put the carb heat on while landing. The engine stalled, and while he was attempting to restart, the crosswind took him off the runway. He "landed" it on the grass. It was a "good" landing.

Another buddy got some bad fuel and had to crash land the Citation he was flying. He landed in a forest, and everyone walked away from the "good" landing. They had to cut up the jet to get it out of the forest (end of jet RIP).
