Throw Tomato In Gold We Trust

I've heard that somewhere out there a batch of US coins exist with the phrase 'In Gold We Trust' on them.

Allegedly there was a mistake at the mint, most of the coins were destroyed but a few 'slipped the net' and entered circulation.

Maybe someone got confused about the Golden Rule- He who has the gold, rules.

Since it's quite expensive to make the dies that coins are stamped with, I seriously doubt this sort of "error" would make it all the way to the point where coins were stamped with it. This isn't a simple manufacturing error (like the famous "backwards biplane" stamp).

A "mistake" such as this would most likely require an entirely new die by made.

It has been reported that some were released "double stamped" as well; thus, I can envision that maybe the capital "I" in the second stamp was placed in between the "o" and the "d" in the first stamp, making it look like "Gold". Of course, that would likely mess up the rest of the words too, but let's just say it's within the realm of possibility.

Read This! In God We Trust...Really?

It was reported in the Washington Post and on the AOL cover page earlier this week that, for the second time, some of the new Presidential Dollar coins were minted without the legend, "IN GOD WE TRUST". On these coins, this phrase was supposed to appear on the edge of the coin.

This was the first time that lettering was added to an American coin in this way and there is obviously some quality control problem with assuring that this happens as it is supposed to. On some George Washington coins, and now some John Adams coins the edge has been left blank.

This is kind of ironic, in the fact that when pictures of the front and back of the new coins were first published, there was a reaction by some in the community because they could not find the familiar phrase on the coin. Predictions of doom and gloom followed as our country was now pushing any mention of "God" off our money. Now what they feared was happening on purpose, has occured accidentally.

Really is entertaining in that regard(at least to me )

There has been speculation the small lot of Washington coins were purposely made to be error coins by the mint, in order to facilitate numismatic interest.........I'll see if I can find a source for that statement.........

I don't think mention of God belongs on our coinage nor currency, yet since US money is no longer backed by gold, trust in God is all we have.

Yes, I realize that special coins that are actually made of gold have value - far more than their actual legal denomination (again, inappropriate mixing of religion and state!).

I'm kidding around, but for the record, I really don't think "God" belongs on our money, and I'm opposed to the "Pledge of Allegiance," as well, with or without "under God."

Also, as both a strict secularist and a practicing believer, it bothers me that God is mentioned anywhere near the images of many of our presidents.
