The world will end in 2060, according to Newton

His famously analytical mind worked out the laws of gravity and unravelled the motion of the planets.

And when it came to predicting the end of the world, Sir Isaac Newton was just as precise.

He believed the Apocalypse would come in 2060 – exactly 1,260 years after the foundation of the Holy Roman Empire, according to a recently published letter.

But according to Einstein, if we can approach the speed of light, we can slow down time, and prolong the Apocalypse.

And don't bother with the argument that lots of people have predicted the end of the world and it hasn't happened yet. He predicted that, too :

Quote:
But he confidently stated in the letter that the Bible proved the world would end in 2060, adding: "It may end later, but I see no reason for its ending sooner."

An unreliable source and an escape hatch...Oh yeah,Newton's argument is undeniable!

From the account I read, he said it would end no sooner than 2060, not in 2060.

sorry in advance but I just can't resist.

I predict the world will end sometime in the future.

Never mind, I'll get it.

Teacher

Well, he was totally right about the whole Newtonian mechanics .....I can't see why he would not be as equally right about the end of the world....

Maybe some of you will not want to read scripture. But if you want to know the truth. God has put it in a wonderful book, the Bible. There are lessons to be learned. and there are warnings. Also God's unchanging love can be read about. We may move but God is the same as he was when he created earth and stars.
And he will send his only son to meet all of us in the clouds, Just as he sent him here to die for us. Jesus took the punishment for sin and bleed and died and rose into Heaven. And the father and the son are the only onces who know the day he will return.
Forgive, repent, and wait for Jesus, God Bless You All!

Shouldn't these post go in Glurge Gallery?

I personally think heaven will be a cold endless void. I can't wait to end up in hell where I will be tortured with sunny days, beautiful white sandy beaches, and lobster dinners.

Welcome to the board maryanneoke.

Since she didn't charge you for that, I think she did tell you something free.

They reproduce the actual documents in the article, in high enough resolution that you can read them (or could, if Newton's handwriting wasn't so awful). What he actually says is:

Quote:
The time lines (?) and half time (?) do not end before 2060 nor after
... with the final date not filled in. (I'm not at all sure of "time lines" or the second "time" in that - can anybody else read it, who knows what he might be talking about?). He also gives ranges of possible dates for the end of "the 2300 years" (between 2132 and 2370), and the beginning of "the 1290 days" (between 2090 and 1374 [sic]).

So whatever he thinks he's predicting, it's not as straightforward as "the end of the world", either. Is there some Biblical significance to the time periods of 2300 years or 1290 days? There's a "1335" days a bit further up, which when you subtract 1290 days, leaves "a part of the seven weeks".

I suspect it may be "time, times and half a time" (in appropriate English of course), a phrase used twice in Daniel and once in Revelation. "Time" is often taken as a metaphor for years in this context, with "Times" as two (hence, three and a half years.)

1290 seems odd. a year of 360 days would give a 1260 "Time, times and half a time", and IIRC 360 was the length of the biblical year, tho that's purely from memory.

Yes, that must be it, thanks! I thought it looked like a repetition of "time" but assumed it couldn't be...

Newton had a passionate interest in theology. His home - where he did many of his ground-breaking experiments - was Woolsthorpe Manor in Lincolnshire. It, and the son of that apple tree, is now a National Trust property. From page 23 of the 1987 (revised 21996) official National Trust guide book to the manor,

Quote:
Newton devoted much of his 30 years in London to his passionate interest in theology, and although he claimed to spend more time studying the Bible than on scientific experiments, his theological writing has been all but forgotten. He had strong and unorthodox religious beliefs, which rejected the doctrine of the Trinity, but he chose to avoid controversy by not publicising his convictions. However, he found no difficulty in placing God firmly at the centre of his universe.
His Unitarian beliefs would have made it hard for him to be ordained as a member of the Church of England as was usually the case for Cambridge professors at the time.

Personally, I'd rather go to hell -- everyone I know and love will be there.

*Isaac* Newton. Thank God! I thought this would be a prophecy in iambic pentameter by Thomas Newton, conservative poet.

(not my doing)
