what do you all think of this?

Looks fake to me. As well as the lack of blood or pain, the gunshot didn't sound like it came from a proper gun; surely it should be more of a "bang" than a "duff", it sounded quite like the starting pistol that is used in athletics to me.

To me, the sound of the gunshot was the only thing that seemed real. The way the "flash" went thru his hand with no attendant spray, and little backflash, and the too neat drill-thru seem too Hollywoodish, done with a green screen. Although, if truly a fake, I have to give props to the dude for getting the GSR realistic.

The thing that I'm having issue with is that there is a bone that passes approximately where the hole is supposed to be. While it may be possible to miss it, it doesn't look as if it would. If he hit the bone, I would expect 2 things. The bullet hitting the bone would create a much more drastic exit wound and I wouldn't expect him to have quite so much control over that finger.

Barring that, I am holding off judgment on final decision until I can look at the video closer. Also I have been around quite a few handguns and having watched quite a few after videoing, I will just say that it is possible the sound is correct. I've never heard a videoed one that was done inside a room.

Initial reactions without trying to hang my own munchkin! (those that know me will understand)

No apparent sign of a bullet impact in the carpet?

Hole too neat?

No bleeding at all? (cauterised? surely bullet/flash not hot enough?)

Sound was OK

OK now.. (seeing it again) I am putting £1000000 on "Fake" thanks to Robigus No backflash at all It seems that we are supposed to believe that the bullet was going faster than the gasses propelling it. i.e. the slug pushed its way through his hand leaving a path for all the gas and flame to follow it leaving not a trace of gas or flame above his palm.

Such a shame! It's brilliantly done, Perhaps the author should visit here and produce a version 2!

I would....

Sort the backflash/gas problem

show a bullet impact or ricochet artefact in the floor

Show some evidence of it stinging a little bit! (Even the guys on Jackass etc holler and screm when things hurt)

And on the reveal, maybe show some bleading or even the hole closing up or swelling shut as he shows it to the camera!

I vote fake, Ive been around enough guns in my lifetime, is really the reason I am almost deaf. I know what gunshots sound like indoors. Also, wouldn't the exit wound on the back of his hand be a lot bigger, especially if he did indeed hit the bone. He should also be screaming his head off in pain.

Never trust the sound of a gun or an explosion in a recording. The membrane of a microphone can't really move fast and far enough to pick up the sound correctly, so it will always be distorted in some way. The exact nature of the distorsion varies a lot and depends on the construction of the microphone, as they tend to have very different characteristics when it comes to this shortcoming.

Watch the blood on the floor, especially when his hand moves in "front" of it. Not very convincing.

I was 90% convinced it was real until I read Hans Off's post. Fake, but very well done. Nice work. I'd be interested to see a version 2.

When I saw a thread named "Man shoots his own hand with a gun" I was expecting either a drunk/drugged guy or someone at a party that lost a bet,not someone who calmly looks at the camera, takes his time positioning the gun and after shooting takes the time to put the gun on the chair before showing the hole in his hand.

I vote for a very well done fake

I'd think it would be impossible to keep your finger extended perfectly straight like that when tendons, muscle (most likely, the bone) has been damaged like that.

Takes me back. When I was a kid, a friend of mine and I were pinging cans with our BB guns. He missed and missed and missed and finally grumbled that no BBs were coming out of his air rifle--so he put his palm over the end of the barrel and fired.

He bled something incredible. The BB was lodged fairly deep in the flesh of his palm, though you could see it. We went into my house, my mom poured hydrogen peroxide on the wound, and with the help of a big pair of tweezers she got the BB out and then sent us to the doctor (she didn't drive and no one who could drive was home). We walked about half a mile to the clinic, with my friend carrying his BB rifle in his right hand and clenching his left hand on a gauze pad over the wound and cussing because it hurt so much.

We got to the doctor's office, and we told the nurse-receptionist that he had shot himself with a BB gun. I don't think she believed us--probably thought I had shot him--so she said, "How on earth could you shoot yourself in the hand like that?"

And my buddy said "Like this," and did it again!

Believe it or not, that doofus retired a millionaire.

I forgot to mention in my earlier post that if you do a gogole search for the name thaty appears at the end of the clip, you get a lot of results for a production company that does computer games development and videos etc...

(can't look at the video now, am at work)

Which makes me think that this is a piece of "test footage" to try out concepts and techniques for special effects.

It's fake.

The gun never fires.

There is no movement of the hammer or slide, no ejection of an empty casing, no recoil. It doesn't even look like he pulls the trigger.

What's more, while the shot sounds about like I would expect, the muzzle flash is excessive and...well, fake looking. A muzzle flash is a small plume of burning gas, not a stroke of white light. In a brightly lit room, I don't even know that it would be visible, especially with a hand covering it. It sure wouldn't burn straight through the hand. There should also be more smoke.

Here's a video of someone actually shooting a real gun:

Also, three more things...

Flesh is malleable - it would "ooze" back over a hole - a natural defense mechanism to plug holes so we can survive injury.

With the sound off, it is obvious that he just twitches violently when he allegedly "shoots" the pistol. As Kutter just said, the upper receiver (slide) doesn't move to eject the fired casing, or to feed the next round. (Welcome to the boards, BTW!!)

Also, the hole is directly in line with the carpal bone that supports his middle finger. With the hunk that MUST have been blown out of it by the blast (if it was real), he would have NO ability to move the finger, let alone keep it rigid enough to display the hole like he did.

Fake. But the powder burn was GREAT!!
