Comment: Hi, this warning message was posted on one of the forums on which I occasionally post:
"Hello everybody, I have just read a warning in the newspaper against watching a certain video clipping on "You Tube"! Do not watch a cartoon clipping about two cute ducks who are in love with each other, as while you watch the clipping, virus will be added to your PC with the result that your passwords etc. will be stolen and your anti-virus programmes will be deactivated and will no longer function!!!! I just thought that you should know, as sometimes we use clippings from "You Tube" in this forum!" |

Doesn't Youtube use a proprietary streaming format that all movies are converted to regardless of source while they are uploaded?
And how would the virus know what AV i was using and how to specifically disable it (its been a long time since McAffee was the only thing available) This seems rather suspect. |

I'm pretty sure youtube uses Adobe Flash Video (.flv). I've been working with flash for a long time and have never heard of a virus embedded in a .flv file.
They could be referring to This, but it isn't a video on youtube that gives you the virus: it's an .exe file (YouTube04567.exe) that appears as a link to a legitimate youtube video, then proceeds to download trojans in the background. |
