Military Not stepping on official seals

Is it true that you should never stand on an official seal printed on the floor near a building entrance. I have heard it a few times, but on TV I have noticed several times where people walk across one. (Sue Thomas FBI is a good example).
Is there any set rule on this.

For me, it's a case of if it's part of the flooring, it's stepable. Now, if there is some kind of secondary deliniation, such as being raised a bit or such, then I might hesitate, but most of the time, it is of the same type of tiling and such as the surrounding floor.

It doesn't help that most of these are placed either in the dead center of said floor or right at the doorway.

This is apparently a superstition in hockey. When your team's logo is painted on the dressing room floor, walk around it.

My high school had a plaque in the floor of the front hall, and the tradition was that if you stepped on it, upperclassmen would make you scrub it with a toothbrush.

An alumna from the first graduating class told me that the administration actually made up the tradition (among others) to give the new school a sense of cohesion.

If you aren't supposed to step on it, why put it on the floor? :P
That was one thing, when our school conferred with some Native Americans in the area about how to treat the logo with more respect (Menomonie Indians) they asked us to take all Indian head logos off the floormats and floors, etc.

At the University of Michigan, legend had it that if you walked upon the big "M" embedded in the sidewalk in the dead-center of The Diag (the main campus) while walking to your class final exam, you would fail that exam, or at least do worse than expected.
