Icon18 Matching Masterpieces with History’s Flash Points

http://www.nytimes.com/2007/06/18/ar...on/18stan.html

Quote:
Picasso’s tale begins in his Paris studio in 1941, with the image of jackboots stomping up a staircase. Simon Schama recounts the story, perhaps apocryphal, of a Nazi who barged in and poked around, picking up a postcard-size reproduction of "Guernica."

The German officer said, "Did you do this?" Picasso replied, "Oh, no, you did."

Is it just me or does Simon Schama always seem to figure very large in the history he tells?

Before the replies start to waft in, I do understand how important context is. For a historian, the stories they tell always say something about the historian and their time as well. So, if there are primary sources that support a particular view then we can judge the work based on facts and analysis of the historian.
