Comment: This is a HUGE controversy within the Chinese Martial arts community in
the United States. It surrounds this school: www.shao-lin.com The problem is with the ties and lineage back to the Chinese temples. The story is almost amazing.. it involves a monk with the genetic disease Hypertrichosis "werewolf syndrome" who mastered all of the styles of Shaolin kungfu. And became the first "Grandmaster." (Grandmaster Su Kong T'ai Djin (1849 - 1928)) The art is called Shaolin-Do (has japanese names due to persecution in Indonesia) Here in Atlanta they call it Shaolin-Tao. There are a lot of schools including http://www.shaolinlasvegas.com/grandmasters.htm http://shaolincenter.com/ They are fairly large in the United States teaching "Traditional Kung Fu" and I cannot tell you how much controversy in this community it has caused. You can go to any kung fu forum or google "Shaolin-Do" and find tons of controversy. Did the hairy monk exist? Was he a Kung Fu master? Is this school nothing but snake oil? |
