Default Breast-Milk Cheese

A French farm claims to specialise in making cheese from human milk since 1947. They say that the mother's milk cheese has a caramel colour and tastes faintly of hazelnut though the diet of the milk donors will affect the flavour.

A woman in Indonesia tried (and failed) to make paneer cheese from breast milk in her kitchen.

The mother's milk dairy products theme has been used in several novels and short stories by Aishling Morgan her "cream" trilogy).

Oh dear, now we get onto the "have you a salted lassi" joke

There was a UL some time back about a rat's milk farm.

I think the fat content of mothers' milk would influence what dairy products could be made with it. A Wendy Swanscombe novel had the full array of dairy products - butter, cheese, yoghurt etc - but I don't know how feasible all of these would be in real life.

The obvious question is "where do they get all the milk?", and I notice that's answered only rather vaguely in the FAQs - I'm sure the donors weren't contacting them by email in 1947!

If they've really been advertising for donors and supervising collection since 1947, I don't believe that it would have gone un-noticed until now.

My husband has been wanting to do this for years. Now that I'm pregnant for the last time, It's gonna be hard to convince him not to do it.

Let us know how it turns out (the baby and the cheese!)

Hmm... I learned how to make cheese and yogurt in 4H when I was a kid. It's really not that hard.

I wonder...

Heck, I may have to try this! Hey, Trixie, you're due before me I think. Let me know if your husband has any success. I'm mildly curious now!

Embarrassed as I am to admit it, my mind went straight to Borat when I read the thread title.

Well, it takes some time and determination, but I understand it is possible for men to lactate. Best of luck to him!

Le Petit Singly existe en deux conditionnements :

* Le Petit Singly familial : 500g. - 15€ (Frais de port en sus)
* Le Petit Singly individuel : 250g. - 10€ (Frais de port en sus)
Fifteen Euro a pound, that's quite cheap. About the price of a decent Roquefort.

I was also amused by the illustration on their quality charter page.

I assume that the cheese is made from breast milk alone and not mixed with other milk, but I couldn't be absolutely sure when reading the article. Anybody know? Also, since breast milk has a blue tinge, I was surprised to read it has a carmel color. I thought it would be blue.

You realise it is a hoax?

It's a hoax? There is no breast milk cheese? *sheesh* That really cheeses me off!

On the other hand, how did you happen to come across that? In a google search, yes, but what the heck were you googling for?

They did a prank years ago on either SpyTV or Girls Behaving Badly (I think it was Chelsea on GBB but can't remember for sure) where they were handing out cheese samples, and then when the person was eating them, they revealed where the mother whose milk made the cheese came from; going into a spiel about each woman and what kind of taste and color from what part of the world...really it was overall gross and very funny. The way the people would practically choke on their sample as it dawned on them was pretty good. It was really just some soft-ripened cheese from goats or cows though.

Sorry to bring this up again, but I've been seeing it of late. Does anyone know for sure if it was a hoax or not?

Damn, I was hoping it wasn't a joke!

As a vegan, I'd be totally interested in breast milk cheese.

I missed this thread last year. I was out of town at an event where a friend was honored for her research in cheesemaking. She's also an extended BFer. I wonder if she ever put the two together.

Humans are animals, so why would the cheese or milk from one be acceptable for consumption, but not from a cow? Or are vegans not as strict as I was led on to believe in school?

Because humans can give consent, and cows can't.
