Wolf Coyotes "respect" chihuahuas

Comment: In 6/7/07 interview in Los Angeles Times, Bijon Phillips was
discussing how she hikes with her chihauhaus and doesn't worry about
coyotes attacking them as coyotes DO NOT attack chihauhau because they
"respect" the breed as they are from same region of desert or? some bull.
I grew up in rural area and cannot remember coyotes being very
discriminating as to what they would attack and eat, let alone the notion
of coyote respect?? What's up, this is hilarious.

Here's the quote:

Quote:
On Sunday morning I'd take my two Chihuahuas, Edmund and Jack, to Bronson Canyon. Did you know that coyotes won't eat Chihuahuas? They respect them as fellow desert creatures. There are packs of wild Chihuahuas in the deserts of Mexico.

It's true. Coyotes won't eat kangaroo rats because they respect them as fellow desert creatures.

Oh wait...

There are packs of wild Chihuahuas in the deserts of Mexico? I would love to see that!

So if a dog is part chihuahua the coyotes will only eat the nonchihuahua parts?

or...

How do coyotes living here (in central Cali) know about the 'wild desert chihuahuas' in Mexico? Did the coyotes there send them an email?

or...

The coyotes around here only recognise two breeds of dogs: bigger than them (probably can't kill and eat), and lunch.

Stop me before I hurt myself.

Did you know that coyotes respect Chihuahuas?

Nice to know that something does!

There are packs of wild Chihuahuas in the deserts of Mexico.........

(David Attenborough voice) "It has been a long hunt but now it is nearly over. The prey stands exhausted, eyes bulging with fatigue. The Chihuahuas eyes just bulge. And now they they move in for the kill, but gingerly. The prey may be at the end of it's tether but it can still be dangerous in extemity. It takes four Chihuahuas to pull down a full-grown rabbit........."

Well, coyotes probably can't stop laughing long enough to lunch on them when they see chihuahuas dressed up by their owners.

But respect them? Yeah. About as much as my cats respect moths.

My guess is that the coyotes just go for a less annoying meal. I mean, really, how can you enjoy dinner when it barks at you in that high-pitched tone?

If you eat them head-first you can avoid that problem.

I could see the fact that the little rat-dogs think they're big, and would be fairly aggressive, would be confusing to the coyotes. I mean, in nature predators tend to be cautious, and they might very well assume that the fact that this tiny harmless looking thing is not afraid of them is a sign it has some hidden inner demonic rat-dog powers.
ETA: Probably thinks it's not an edible dog, but a rabid rodent.

Mexico Chihuahua Joke

Reminds me of an old joke, changed for the situation:

Quote:
A man runs into a bar where another fellow is drinking.
First man: Who owns the coyote out there?
Second man: I do, why?
First man: He's dead.
Second man: How'd he die?
First man: My dog killed him.
Second man: Your dog? What type of dog can kill a coyote?
First man: I have a chihuahua.
Second man: How can a chihuahua kill a coyote?
First man: I don't know, but I think he got stuck on the way down.
