Default Odd MySpace friend request -- possible virus.

I got a strange MySpace friend request today. I registered with MySpace a long time ago, but never bothered to create my MySpace page, so all the messages I get through them are spam. Most are of the "check out my webcam" porn spam variety, but this one was different. When I went to the person's profile, all there was was a message that said "This profile is set to private. You must install this viewer to see his/her profile." This looks highly suspicious, and I suspect if I click the link to install the "viewer" I'd probably get a virus instead. Does anyone have more information on this?

According to WHOIS, the hiddenprofiles.net domain is registered to Said Mahmod (based in Palistine). This same person also shows up on a Fake Bank Watchlist and is mentioned in association with several other scams.

Most of the spam pages are able to be reported @ the very bottom with little chance of clicking on the actual page. I have, however, encountered pages where basically a pop up (usually porn viewer) blocks any access to the myspace features, therefore making them unreportable.

The only way to see a private profile should be to add them as a friend. If you can install a viewer to get around that I'd think it was a scam even without the other information in this thread.

Got a similar e-mail last week. The MySpace page is now gone. Like you I have not filled anything out on my webpage yet.

We get a bunch of the "fee i phone", and "sexy singles" myspace spam. I check out all the profiles of the friend requests we receive and I've found that every time there is no photo in the little box accompanying the request it has been spam.

I haven't encountered the spam in the OP yet but I'll keep my eye out for it.

I get at least five a day. I more or less mark them as SPAM and delete them.

Ever since I've been on MySpace I've found that I'm ridiculously popular with shapely TWENTYsomething women who are having a hard time meeting middle-aged men. They seem to be really cool people, I mean all their interests, likes/dislikes seem to be exactly what a young man would want, yet they can't seem to meet any.

Anyway, I reset my preferences so that I don't get friend requests from anyone who doesn't know my name or e-mail address.

I just saw today that there is a new button on the friends request that says "mark as spam", I am pleased w/ this, no more clicking & entering the security code to report!

Last night I had an email from "Friend" purporting to be a MySpace invitation. The text was "Good photos" and an invitation to become a friend + link to click.

This looked odd as I don't have a MySpace account or MySpace friends.

Am I being paranoid or is this an attempt to send me to a viral-ridden page?

(Decided to revive this thread as it came up when I did searches for MySpace virus friend)

This perhaps?
http://www.theregister.co.uk/2008/01..._myspace_page/

Or possibly a link that doesn't take you to myspace at all and infact to a site infected with malware?

That looks likely. I didn't check to see where the link led (or the email headers) as I'm not a MySpacer so it went the way of all those phishing scams purporting to be from banks I'm not a customer of.

Besides, the sender was "Friend" and being too antisocial to have friends I automatically deleted it
