Default Explosions disrupt Boston Marathon

Two explosions disrupted the Boston Marathon on Monday, causing injuries and scattering crowds near the finish line, witnesses said.

The blasts occurred after the top racers had completed the course, but thousands of others were still running. CNN reported that authorities halted the race.

ETA: Uh, could've sworn I put this in Soapbox Derby. Is there an easy way to move this?

God. Why would someone want to bomb the Boston Marathon?

I immediately thought of the 1996 Olympic bombing.

Surely the whole thing is a hoax foisted upon the public by the Obama administration to advance their liberal agenda of bomb control.

At least two confirmed deaths, have seen some sources say three.
The marathon organisers and Vice President Biden both now referring to bombs rather than explosions.

Per CBS News:

Quote:
Police found and defused at least one other explosive device. Law enforcement sources tell CBS News correspondent Bob Orr that authorities found one other device that is intact and has not been detonated.

[anguished sarcasm]Ooh, according to the same article:

Quote:
Vice President Joe Biden was on a conference call with gun control activists when staffers turned on televisions in his office Monday to view coverage of the explosions....
Coincidence...? I think NOT![/anguished sarcasm]

A friend was in the race. She finished a while before the bombs went off and is fine, much to my relief.

I keep seeing the date come up as an explanation as a possible domestic attack. Someone said it had something to do with the Boston Tea party, but that doesn't make sense. The only thing I can think of is Tax day, but the reference was to the original Tea Party. Wasn't that later in the year?

I'm glad your friend is alright, Canuckistan but the rest. Right now I'm just too stunned to form coherent thoughts. This is awful. I wonder who did it this time.

Wintermute, it's Patriot's Day. It celebrates Lexington and Concord.

Why should it be rhetorical? The marathon is an event with a lot of history, so it's something a lot of people cherish. Large crowds, no perimeter security (like in a stadium), lots of nooks and crannies to hide things, international flavor, lots of media for post-bomb coverage, held on a weekday for maximum exposure on the news. There's probably a lot more reasons as well.

I have never heard of that but that makes sense. I could see a tea party connection due to it being Tax day, but the people I saw talking about it, were talking about the original Boston Tea party and not the modern one.

I'm glad to hear she's alright, Canuck.

What a horribly NFBSKed thing to happen. Why, why would people do this?

Sending my thoughts to Boston. This is awful.

I too and awaiting to see how soon it'll be before my conspiracy theorist facebook friends start sharing youtube videos "explaining it all!". Good grief.

There is a slightly disturbing video already up on youtube - it's a cameraman who was standing behind the finish line when the two bombs went off. The one further away was so close in time to the first that you couldn't really hear it - and you only see it out of the corner of the frame. It did not look to be a very big explosion either, and the damage around for windows and storefronts was limited to just one building and only one or two floors up. (Those who watch it may want to stop watching before the 80-second mark to avoid anything potentially disturbing.)

The cameraman in the video does run up to the bomb location - the one closest to the finish line - and it was fairly lightly populated before the explosion. I imagine that the major injuries happened at the second bomb, further away.

CBS has been airing non-stop footage from the site. They also tell you to listen in for the second explosion when they replay the tape. It's such a chilling sound.

The emergency response time and how calm people were was pretty astounding.
