Finally watched " The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo" (2011 version with Rooney Mara) - good movie but the rape scene and the mutilated cat were very disturbing. Trying to decide if want to watch the Swedish version on Netflix before watching the other 2

DS#1 took DD and me to Into Darkness. Loved it a lot. I'm a Trekker from way back. I loved the original series, but could never really get into the ones that followed. I love the reboot and seeing the characters and concepts updated.

I think what is really done right is the chemistry. That is what I loved about the old show and that is what I love about the new movies. Peg's Scotty is just perfect, he plays him his way: funny, but not demeaning. That is what I hated hated about the guest role James Doohan had on TNG. They made him an old silly fool blech. Peg's side kick is perfect a way for Peg to "think out loud. Sort of like his own Jiminy Cricket. The guy who plays Bones is channeling DeForest Kelley subtly enough that it's not mocking, flirty, emotional, paranoid, cynical, and a doctor not a... I like Kirk's characterization in this reboot, he's strong, flawed, and cocky and he is well balanced by Spock's overly analytical and often naive style . In other words, a very good reboot of the original story. It was always about three main people that balanced each other. And a strong inner circle of talented strong people who supported them and followed their lead and led in turn when their time came.

The movie itself: I was surprised I thought it was going to be something else, but it turned out very well and I liked it better than the referenced material. There is that vague enough?

After finally getting to see the flick, I also read Brad's hilarious Cliff's notes. I kept hearing it in my head as part of Andy Griffith's comic act, which is how I recommend the audio version be recorded. What? Andy's gone? Aw, shucks. Well, he lives on in my imagination.

I haven't seen the new Star Trek movie, but going from the trailer: what is it about people jumping from high places in the ST reboot? The first movie had the scene in which they jump to the mining platform. The trailer has 2 scenes of people jumping from high places.

I disagree. I thought that episode did a good job of showing a man (literally) out of his own time and coming to terms with what that meant, while the Enterprise crew learned to respect what he could still offer.

It's weird like there's some cliched trope out there... that really never existed.
There weren't any other particularly famous or well-regarded films in that setting, but I've seen it come up a fair few times in microbudget schlock on The Cinema Snob.

ST:ID= WOW! I will admit to being a total Trek fan girl. I was totally blown away. Normally I'm a sit quietly in my seat & watch the movie passively. Not this time. I was gasping, muttered a low curse under my breath at one point & kept leaning forward to get closer to the screen.
Spoilers:

I was surprised it was Khan. I had stayed away from a lot of press & other things related to the movie so while I had heard a rumor, I'd dismissed it. I really liked all the little homages to the original series & the movie.
I thought the cast was a bit more jelled this time. We get to see more humor & bickering.

Finally saw "Gettysburg" (1993, with Martin Sheen as General Lee) the whole way through intead of in bits and pieces. Four hour plus movie, but entirely worth it. I really liked how in the opening and ending credits, they'd show you the actual photograph of the man being portrayed, then fade to a picture of the actor portraying him--it seemed a nice respectable touch somehow.

I toured Gettysburg about six years ago, and remembered thinking then how many 'near misses' there'd been--if this squad hadn't moved over here then, then the opposing side would have done such-and-such, had two opposing companies gone such-and-such way, they would have run into each other and instead missed each other, stuff like that. It was sad to watch several of the high-ranking men from both sides predict what was going to happen....and how badly it was going to end on all sides. (I'm not sure if Turner took dramatic license with having these men make these predictions, but given that they were career soldiers, I could see them being able to figure out what they would do, what the other side would do--they knew the leaders of the other side, after all--and knowing that the only thing that would save them would be an incredible stroke of luck that wasn't likely to happen.)

General Pickett's line of "General Lee, I have no division," probably has to be about the most heartbreaking line of the entire thing. CSA General Armistead crying out, "Oh God, not both of us!" when he was told his friend, Union General Hancock had been hit was also equally heart-rendering.

Saw Star Trek: Into Darkness last night, and loved it. I'd say just as good as the last one.

Not me; I wound up sitting in the second row (nothing else was available). I was impressed by what a nice complexion Zachary Quinto has.

I saw Take Shelter last night. It was interesting because it's not exactly a horror movie, but it's much more anxiety-provoking than most horror movies I've seen. Not like "Boo! Aaaa!" fear, but just deep and escalating anxiety. I liked it a lot.

Another STID lover. Like Morgaine said, it's so good you'll be talking to the screen. I don't know how other people feel about (Spoiler in white) Action Hero Spock chasing after Cumberbatch through the streets of San Fran, but I sure as heck enjoyed it. What's the use of having Vulcan strength if you don't get to stretch your legs every once in awhile?. The only hiccup for me was Cumberbatch as Khan Casting against type can be fun, but seeing him in such an iconic ST role took me out of the story sometimes. But I've never been much of a Cumberbatch fan, anyway.

That dream General Zod had didn't count as a horror movie?

All of the dreams together, or one in particular?

Anyway, I think it's more of a drama than a traditional horror movie. It could be considered a genre-crosser, though.

Another STID watcher here. I'm a Trekkie that loves Trek for being Trek, and have admitted that someone could make garbage and call it Trek and I would still probably love it. That said, I was literally weepy with awe at the theater. It was far darker than typical Trek, but there were plenty of momements of humor, it was deep and emotional when it needed to be without ending up overly so. I was very pleased with the end product, especially with the actors and character development; Uhura redeemed the characters fumbling in The Undiscovered Country and everyone continued to justify the casting choices that were made in 09. I definitely plan on seeing it again in the theaters.

The showing of ST:ID we went to was very poorly attended. It was the midnight premier in a small town cinema, so there is that. Because I was at this poorly attended showing with my adult children; I couldn't get up and cheer, or laugh really loudly, without making a bit of a scene which would have embarrassed me and really made DD rather anxious. She is pregnant Again and can't take all of her meds. I actually think DS would have liked to see me get up and yell. I cheered in my heart, though. To me it's like the original show again, but all shiny new and with better effects. I actually liked this story line better. I hope the franchise in this reboot goes on for a while longer. I'm really enjoying it.

There was a 40 something guy there in a command uniform shirt, complete with the new sort of sharkskin look. He was there all by himself; poor guy, he couldn't even get his kids to go.
