Sign on the door of a local restaurant: No cigarettes, cigars, pipes, e-cigs, hookahs or joints.

Was not expecting the last two.

I’ve see fog blowing from the AC vents on planes before, typically in humid places, but today I momentarily had bits of frost blowing on me while we were at the gate. And in Sacramento, where it isn’t even humid at all.

Also, the captain said the wrong airline in his welcome speech. He was like “Welcome aboard this Delta... I mean United Express flight.” But that was understandable since it was a SkyWest flight, which operates flights on behalf of several different airlines.

Today I saw a new phone booth not far from where I live. The full enclosed glass-and-metal type.

Did you see any California surfer-dude types in the area?

I did a hike down to a waterfall/swimming hole today. While I was going for a swim a couple showed up with a small black and white dog, like a beagle or similar breed. The dog and its owner played in the water for a little while and then left. About a minute after they left another almost identical dog showed up. I at first assumed that same couple had returned, but that dog was with a different couple. That dog also played in the water in an almost identical manner.

Also the Airbnb I’m staying in has a framed picture attached to the ceiling. It’s not even over the bed or someplace where I could easily look up and see it. It’s above a little shelf area over the door to the bathroom.

Odd thing I heard yesterday: At the airport flying home from the islands yesterday I swear I heard the gate agent paging what sure sounded to me like "Bigot, party of two." It's possible she was mispronouncing their name, but still.

Saw a raptor sitting on a light pole over I495. I think it was an owl.

When I was in college, my school's mascot was an owl. I'd occasionally hear hooting at night, which I assumed was some sort of recording. Right up until one night when a huge great horned owl swooped over my head.

I read a piece in the local daily blab a couple of years ago that said this is becoming a common thing.

Apparently raptors like the wide open vistas near major highways, as it offers them unobstructed views of any possible prey running around.

After reading that, I started paying more attention at interchanges when I wasn't driving, and noticed it wasn't unusual at all to see some sort of bird of prey circling around in the airspace above.

We visited the Eagle Center in Wabasha a couple of years ago. A volunteer there told us that bald eagles especially are very opportunistic hunters, and will always take the path of least resistance. They're not above stealing another hunters catch if they can for instance.

It's not new. I have a long highway commute, and for many years I've been noticing (and often keeping count of) the hawks I see sitting on fence posts, road signs, and power poles next to the highway. I can't keep count of the ones that are flying, because there are a lot, and it would take my attention away from the road.

Driving the I-5 corridor in Oregon, I often see red tailed hawks and occasionally golden or bald eagles perched on fences and trees or scavenging roadkill.
