I gotta admit I like the name.
Though I have to admit I've never understood why some people who use unconventional spelling get upset when someone can't pronounce the name on the first try. |

I hear that. If you are going to name your daughter Khatharhynne, you should not complain that people have to stare at it a while before figuring out it's "Katherine." If you wanted things to be easy, you should have named her Katherine.

Well, I feel for the kids who get stuck with unconventionally-spelled names and have to explain them every day until they're old enough to do something about it.

Is "the dash don't be silent" a direct quote? If not, then the teller of the story might well be using it to indicate race and invoke the stereotype of the lower-class uneducated black person with theit poor linguistic skills. Except in AAVE (African-American Vernacular English), that sentence is grammatical. AAVE has a different set of grammatical rules from "standard" English. It is not simply "poor linguistic skills".
As for the name, it's creative, and would (as previously mentioned) be a neat shorthand for one's name, a parent should expect people to have issues pronouncing it, as they're not used to pronouncing punctuation. I'm gonna name my next child M@. Or M&y, if it's a girl. Or Ma~. |

I was kinda thinking "Mandy", but "Mampersandy" is WAY cooler!

Actually, "Ampersandy" would be a pretty cool name.

I hadn't even thought of that. I know a Janine who uses J9 in her email address. (I'm pretty sure she signs formal documents with letters and not numbers, though.)

When I was in college, someone had asked how I spell my name and I jokingly answered "D-a-3-v-e. The 3 is silent".
Strangely, this came in useful when I went to work for a large company where 7% of the work force was named "Dave" or "David". I started signing my E-mails as "Da3ve" so that folks would easily know which "Dave" it was... |

I kinda like the idea of Ma~ but I also thought M&y was Mampersandy.

If I had a son, I'd name him > Top

Which is why we're not having kids, dear, because I can't see naming anyone "Greater Than Top."
Your earlier suggestion, Wallstreet Panic Mikkelson, is beginning to look reasonable in comparison. |

Or ^top. But that only works if he's a redhead.

Closing Angle Bracket Top? Diamond Bracket Top? If I have kids, one name will have to be ‽. Because "‽ Palmer" would get all the friends. |

It boggles my mind how often people see "Robinson" but think it's pronounced "Robertson" or "Robison" or "Robson." Very seldom does anyone pronounce it correctly. I even had a teacher once who pronounced it "Robingson" although she may have had some sort of, well, I don't want to say disability because that's almost certainly not the right word, but she insisted she couldn't hear any difference between "Robin" and "Robing" even when I overemphasised the "g." She was clearly adding the "g" to my name, but instisted she wasn't even though every other student the in the class told her they heard it. Last edited by robbiev; 04 November 2008 at 05:30 PM.
