Icon97 Stress makes grey hair?

My mom always told me that kids give parents grey hair. Mainly because kids cause so much stress. I wonder has been proven?

Welcome to the boards!

There is some anecdotal evidence that stress may contribute to graying, and certainly very specific stressors (chemotherapy, certain medical conditions, etc.) may contribute.

My grandmother said her distinctive grey streak developed days after her mother's sudden death.

I could buy that stress could cause your hair to grey. Stess causes all kinds of physical changes to the body, and not for the better. I just never understood how hair could go completely grey over a short period of time. The hair shaft itself isn't alive, so how could it respond to stress?

Empress Alexandra of Russia apparently went grey over a ten-day period after her hemophilliac son almost died from a fall in 1912. I think I've read this in Nicholas and Alexandra, by Robert K Massie, but am not sure, and my Google-fu is failing me right now.

I've noticed that presidents tend to go grey when they are in office. I'm not sure if it's because of their age-- but the main ones that come into my mind are Clinton and now Obama. I'm sure JFK would have had grey hair too if he had been given the chance.

My first gray hair appeared while my son was in the hospital for a month with a bad bacterial infection. Absolute, irrefutable proof that stress causes gray hair.

Or they quit coloring when they're done with the campaign trail

My wife and I comment on this, too. Ex-presidents have a tendency to look haggard. With good reason, I'd expect.
