I'm not defending my own interpretation. Yes, there are pages missing in the Google books preview (scroll up), and I suspect if one read that whole chapter, one would know more about "Buffalo Gals" than one ever wanted to know. I'm still as much in the dark as anybody.

Yes, "Help Me". I have no idea what she was referring to, though.

Cowboy

As far as I can tell the whole "hole in her stocking" thing started as a joke for identifying people on the dance floor. The musicians would call out who would dance with whom, for example in a square dance. (A hole in a woman's stocking was embarrassing because it implied she was too lazy to darn it, darn it.)

That's assuming too much, I think, especially if we're talking about street prostitutes. Did prostitutes in the 19th century earn even a living wage? Did they not have pimps or madams who took the bulk of their earnings?

Oh, I didn't think she was referring to Buffalo Gals or to anything except a woman with a hole in her stocking -- I was just struck by the similarity.

I would have no idea on the first one, the second one would depend on a lot of factors, but I would image it would be yes for the vast majority of them.

Again, my theory was just a WAG and not much else. I honestly have no clue what type of prostitutes the song is referring to and what they looked like. I was just trowing out an idea that made sense to me.

Holes are easy to get in one's stockings and it's not as if you can constantly carry backups. And suppose your backup also tears?

I don't know that a hole in one's stocking really means that much, except that you can see her stockings. In the 19th century, that would have been a scandalous notion.

Sorry this is totally OT but that reminds me of this song.
