No NPR Newscaster Carl Kasell Dies At 84

Every weekday for more than three decades, his baritone steadied our mornings. Even in moments of chaos and crisis, Carl Kasell brought unflappable authority to the news. But behind that hid a lively sense of humor, revealed to listeners late in his career, when he became the beloved judge and official scorekeeper for Wait Wait... Don't Tell Me! NPR's news quiz show.

Kasell died Tuesday from complications from Alzheimer's disease in Potomac, Md. He was 84.

Just heard this on our local NPR station. Another end-of-an-era passing.

I suspected he probably had health problems when Wait Wait Don't Tell Me replaced their long standing prize of having Carl record your voicemail greeting with having any of their on air personalities do it. It's still sad to hear this.

I noticed the exact same thing, and had the same reaction.

Very sad news, sometimes when we hear a voice on the radio for a long time, we can take that voice for granted. I have been listening to NPR's Morning Edition since it first aired. I appreciated Carl's demeanor. He took his broadcasting seriously. This made me appreciate his humor on WWDTM even more. I noticed the change in the prize as a probable indication of his decline. In the appreciations of him online, it is evident that those he worked with love and respected him as well.
Definitely the end of an era, All Things Considered led with his death last night.
