It's pretty, wherever it is.

Is it the *gasp* open spaces people object to? Or that a government building doesn't look like some cinder block prison block?

[ETA: I was typing while the second post went up, but the Cook County DOC does not include it in their slide show. And, in the 4th picture down, 1st post, there are words on the window whose reflection is on the floor. I can't read them all, but one looks like "morgen," and another looks like "ich." ]

According to this page, there is 11 different cook county jails, and none of them look like that.

ETA

Would a real prison really be made of that much glass? You'd think that someone would realize that having easily broken windows would be a bad idea in case of a breakout attempt or a riot. Also, in the first post, what's with the three women walking around outside of it? AFAIK, civilians would never be allowed to walk around unescorted that close to a prison. Also, note the lack of fences or guard towers around the structure. I call shenanigans; It's probably a hotel or office building or something like that.

Everybody is also in civvies.

I don't doubt it might be a jail. It's just not one in the US.

Yes.

The first three words are gestern heute morgen (yesterday, today, tomorrow) and the last one does look like ich. I don't know how you'd translate that into English as a sentence, but I presume it's a slogan of some kind. There's also some tiny writing under ich that I can't make out.

It looks rather like I'd expect a prison in Iceland to look, based on my professor's description of them back in community college.

I agree with it possibly not being in the US, but do wonder if it may be a minimum security prison. Not all prisons are maximum security.

Why can't prisoners have pretty buildings to live in? They have to remain for years in the same rooms, buildings, and bleak dirt and concrete grounds for years*. Why should something that is already unpleasant be even more unpleasant by ugly surroundings. Personally, anyone who complains that prisoners shouldn't have one or two luxurys should try living a few weeks or months in a prison they say is too lavish. For some reason I doubt they would complain. I don't think prisoners should stay in five star resorts, but also don't think that squalid concrete blocks with few windows, bad food, no luxuries, and no outlets for prisoners is the ideal place to put them. This looks to me like a good median point.

*Living in a one block radius where nothing changes for a week is punishment enough for me - living that way for years would be horrible regardless of how beautiful the building is (note that the outdoor areas are extremely bleak).

ETA: Spanked in regards to where it actually is. Nice job Austria!

Because they're all dirty, horrible people who should be drawn and quartered at their family's expense. We good people shouldn't have to pay to quarter such heinous people. If we need prisons, they should be given a concrete floor to sleep on and a hole in the ground for a toilet. No paper or anything. They should just get bread and water combined together as a meal through a slot in their door.

I've seen that attitude too much.

Good for them. It's a nice facility, and even those who break the law are entitled to the mental health benefits that a nice facility provides.

There's your mistake. They are no longer humans once they have committed their crimes, which is why they deserve nothing but punishment. Forever.

wonder what people would think of this place... I can't find pictures of the inside, but I remember when they built it. The minimum security areas are literally houses. and looking at them when they were built, no bars on the windows... (of the minimum security houses)
